After Tom's older sister Mary becomes engaged to club-man Jack Loring, the town celebrates the arrival of Lord Wallingford, who pretends to be part of a banking commission negotiating a billion dollar loan, but who really is a trickster seeking a wealthy American wife. Wallingford hires as his assistant Tom, who uncovers Wallingford's plot and for a dollar, introduces Wallingford to Mary. After Wallingford succeeds in discrediting Jack in Mary's eyes and begins to court Mary, Tom and his friend Willie, a female impersonator, gather evidence against Wallingford, but Mary refuses to "slip Tom a dollar" for it. Wallingford cowardly deserts Mary in a moment of danger, and Jack rescues her. Tom collects dollars from both Wallingford and Jack, and arranges a meeting, during which Wallingford receives a black eye. After Wallingford hires thugs to get even with Jack, Tom tells Mary, who foils their plans. The thugs and Wallingford are arrested, and Jack weds Mary.
